Switching Accountants in Slovakia: Why Year-End Is the Right Time

Why is now the right time to switch accountants?

Many business owners have been unhappy with their accountant for years but keep putting off the change. Emails go unanswered, the books are months behind, and the tax bill arrives a week before the deadline. If this sounds like your Slovak s.r.o., year-end is the best moment to change.

1. A clean start on 1 January

For most Slovak s.r.o. companies, the financial year matches the calendar year. If your new accountant takes over from 1 January, nobody has to untangle half-finished work from mid-year. Your previous accountant closes 2026, and the new one starts with a clear opening balance.

2. E-invoicing becomes mandatory in 2027

From 1 January 2027, invoices between Slovak businesses must be structured electronic invoices sent through the Peppol network. A PDF sent by email will no longer be enough. For most companies, this means new invoicing software and new processes. Since the change is coming anyway, it makes sense to make it with an accountant who already works digitally. 3. Your year-end close and tax return are still ahead

The 2026 corporate income tax return is due on 31 March 2027, and the deadline can be extended by notification. If you switch now, your new accountant sees your numbers before the year-end close and can suggest tax planning steps in December. In March, there is no time left for that.

4. Tax rules have changed, and will keep changing

In the last two years, Slovakia introduced three corporate tax rates (10%, 21% and 24%), raised the standard VAT rate to 23% and added a financial transaction tax. In this environment, it is not enough for your accountant to simply record invoices. You need a partner who tells you in advance when something affects your company.

Signs it is time to switch

  • You wait days for an answer to a simple question.
  • You do not know how up to date your books are.
  • You find out your tax bill only days before the deadline.
  • You have to deliver documents on paper or by post.
  • You get no explanations in English and rely on translation apps for official letters.
